7 Weeks!

rachelHello, all! I hope all of the Dean College Blog’s lovely readers had an awesome spring break! (I know I did…too short, if you ask me!) Now students are back into the swing of things, such as rehearsals, projects, and an entire MUSIC FESTIVAL ! (How awesome is that?!) So, even though the weather is less than stellar lately, the first official day of Spring is today! Which means, we only have seven weeks of classes left (wowsies!) Who knows were the time went…anyone? Well, for a celebration of Spring, I have my super-duper list of Spring facts! Ready?! Go!

  • Some popular Spring flowers are tulips, daises, irises, and lilies.
  • The first flowers usually to bloom are dandelions.
  • Baby birds first learn to sing between their first 10-60 days after being born (cool!)
  • Children grow faster in the spring
  • Spring fever is a real thing and may make the body experience physiological changes (weird!)
  • About 1800 species of birds migrate.
  • Benjamin Franklin (which Franklin is named after!!) was the first American to suggest Daylight Savings Time.
  • In Europe, Daylight Savings Time is actually known as summertime.

Pretty nifty, eh? I think so!

And everyone, don’t forget, get your tickets to Godspell before they run out!

Until next time!

10 Things You Didn’t Know About Dean College & Franklin, MA

Photo is from one of our RD's Riley Fickett on Instagram!

Photo is from one of our RD’s Riley Fickett on Instagram!

Here’s 10 potentially fun, funny, and interesting things you did not know about Dean and the community around us, Franklin, Massachusetts!

1. Dean College has a swimming pool. Wait, we do? Yup. And students can use it! Swimming is GREAT exercise!

boomer_ugly2. Our Bulldog mascot used to look like a rabbit.

3. Minutes up the road from Dean at the Town Common, there is an awesome farmers market when the weather gets warmer! Awesome locally grown produce, lots of desserts, etc. Students should definitely check it out.

4. This one MAY be obvious, but we’re willing to bet some people didn’t even put two and two together…Franklin, MA was named after…Benjamin Franklin! Whaaaaaat!? It is also home to America’s first public library, and Benjamin Franklin’s statue is right out front.

5. Franklin actually has a town song. And it’s actually pretty good! Listen to it.

6. Not EVERY video Dean produces has Rachel Ladd in it.

…but most of them do.

7. The “Pieri gym” on campus is named after Lou Pieri, who was the owner of the Providence Reds/Rhode Island Reds (a hockey team that played in the Canadian-American Hockey League between 1926 and 1936 and the American Hockey League from 1936 to 1977) and he was also part owner of the Boston Celtics.

Students design & actually build the amazing sets, and are an integral role in tech and the production crew. The entire production of a show consist of students in the School of The Arts, School of Dance and School of Business.

9. Dean College has a unique relationship with The Kraft Group/Patriot Place in nearby Foxboro, MA. For example, Dean welcomed Bob Kraft to campus to speak at the Executive Lecture Series as part of the Dean Leadership Institute in 2012. (Cheap plug, 2013 will be Bert Jacobs from The Life is good Company — don’t miss it, RSVP NOW, it is FREE!). Dean also has a unique Sports Management degree, which could be VERY useful if you’re looking for a job working for the Patriots of the Revolution!

10. The number 90. 90% of students live on campus. 90% of students receive some form of merit aid. 90% of students read this blog. (OK, maybe not…but how awesome was this article? Share it on Facebook!)

So…how many of those 10 things did you already know?

Congrats to Romeo & Juliet!

rachelI was one of the lucky students to be able to catch one of the performances of Romeo & Juliet on campus…and WOW. What a beautiful show! I wanted to send a HUGE congrats to everyone involved – from creative team, to tech, to the actors, it was an amazing show from beginning to end. And another congrats to everyone who was nominated for their acting and stage management! If you were also able to catch the show, then I’m sure you’d agree. Every second was absolutely stunning…I can’t say it enough; congrats!

We Found Nemo…Just In Time for Valentine’s Day!

It_sStormNemo2125423--525x415How did everyone enjoy/survive Nemo?! Lots of napping? Lots of eating? Movie marathons? Snow days are always the best days! However, I hope everyone was safe too…snow can be a really dangerous thing, so everyone be careful walking to classes!
And now, on to better and…more romantic things! Valentine’s Day is this Thursday, and as tradition stands for my blog, I decided to grace the cyber world with some fun Valentine’s Day Facts!

  • More than 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are sold every year.
  • Men spend, on average, $130 on presents for their dates every year (wow!)
  • 50 million roses worldwide are given on Valentine’s Day.
  • Teachers receive the most valentine’s, followed by children, mothers, wives, and finally, significant others.
  • rosesVerona (the city in Italy in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet) receives over 1,000 love letters every year addressed to Juliet.
  • The earliest Valentine’s Day gifts were candles, not chocolates or flowers.
  • 61% of people celebrate Valentine’s Day.
  • The most common gift for V-Day is candy, followed by flowers.
  • 145 million valentine’s are sent out each year.
  • The Taj Mahal in India was actually a Valentine’s Day gift! It was built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan as a memorial for his wife.
  • About 3% of people give gifts to their pets every year.

And there you have it folks. Have a happy heart day!

…And We’re Back from the Festival!

Hello, everyone! I hope everyone had a wonderful time on the Dean College Campus…many of the members of the Dean College theatre department had a wonderful time in Hyannis at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival!

Where to begin ?!

There were TONS of incredible workshops that we took part in, that spanned to all the aspects of theatre. This includes dance (a Fosse, Chicago the musical, and musical theatre jazz workshops to include a few), costuming, stage fighting, make-up, stage management, acting, directing, and choreographing…a lil’ something for everyone! And while all of this was happening, there were different competitions that everyone from the different colleges competed in – stage management, the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship, the Musical Theatre Initiative, directing…again, a lil’ something for everyone. AND, not only that, but there were also auditions for one-act plays and 10 minute plays, which three Dean students, Jillian Lyons, Jordan MacKenzie (an awesome alum!), and Sarah Kouhaila participated in!

WOW. That’s a lot of stuff!

So…let’s talk about winning stuff. Because us theatre kids were able to make Dean College proud by winning stuff (and who doesn’t love stuff?!) Chet Davino won a speech and articulation award for his incredibly beautiful speech on stage, fellow blogger Leilani Ricardo won a scholarship to the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company’s summer internship, I won “Best Comedic Actress” and am now moving on to the national competition for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship in Washington D.C., and Robert White placed in the Musical Theatre Initiative! Whoohoo! Lots of cool stuff happening for us, and all because we are following our dreams and doing what we love.

I personally want to thank Dean College, Paula Rooney, Linda Ragosta, and David Krasner for giving us all the opportunity to attend the festival…it was truly an incredible experience. And I also want to thank my amazing scene partner, Sean Morris, for being the most incredible, talented, and wonderful person/friend/partner EVER. I truly celebrate you!

AND NOW…SOME PICTURES !

Image

We all won stuff! (We love stuff).

Image

Me and Jim Beauregard (he rocks).

Image

I was calling my mom and dad to tell them I’m going to Washington D.C. (Yes I am crying but it’s okay because I’m a big sap).

Image

Me and my scene partner, Sean Morris, hugging for the first time after we found out we moved on! Out of around 215 nominees, they selected only 2 to go to Washington D.C…wowsies!

Until next time, folks!

We’re Off to the Festival!

RachelHello everyone! For the next week I will be out of commission (in a good way!) because we are off to festival! The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, that is!

Every year, arts management students, stage managers, tech theatre students, and of course, us actors from Dean (and other colleges from around the country) attend the KCACTF, based on where they live (New England is Region 1). There, we compete for the Irene Ryan acting scholarship award, the Musical Theatre Initiative, among other competitions. We also get to take a TON of workshops and classes (I, for one, am excited to take the Bob Fosse jazz class!) And the coolest part about this is that Dean College participates every year, so every theatre major gets a chance to experience it!

Until I return, y’all!

So This is the New Year…!

RachelQuick, 5 points for the person who knows what song the title of this post is from! (It’s from my favorite band).

WELCOME BACK, EVERYONE ! It’s so AWESOME to be back to Dean…I feel like I’ve been away for 5 years, and at the same time, it feels like I never left. I can’t believe it’s the second semester, which means we only have 4 months left of classes! I hope everyone had a wonderful break and kept up with the blog, even if they weren’t on campus. (The post by Alex about equality was absolutely beautiful, right?!) And I hope everyone’s ready for their new classes…this semester is going to be GREAT.

Just a friendly reminder that we have a TON of performances coming up from the School of Arts…including Romeo and Juliet, Godspell, Synergy Show, Company Show, Choreographer’s Showcase…try and make it out to all of them & support your fellow artists and students! Plus, it’ll be a good way to keep warm since it’s like, -3,000 degrees outside all of the sudden.

Until next time, folks!

Post-Thanksgiving “Wisdom”

Happy post-Thanksgiving, everyone! How did everyone’s Black Friday go? Score any good details? Now that Thanksgiving and Black Friday are over, and our mini-break is almost over, it’s time to focus on those last few weeks until Winter Break. And though many of us can’t even BELIEVE that the semester is almost over, we still have a TON of stuff to do! So, to help everyone with that post-Thanksgiving “Blah” feeling, and all of the work we have to complete, I have written this very blog post!

First and foremost, everyone has to remember that grades are super important – it’s really easy to think “It’s the end of the semester…I’m too tired and stressed, so I just don’t feel like doing it anymore.” No no no NO, my friends! Not the way to go! Final projects, tests, speeches, etc. are usually worth 20% or more of your overall grade for the semester, so if you bomb that, you can kiss your B+ goodbye! So, enjoy a good cup of coffee, get a study group together, get enough sleep, and FOCUS. It’s so easy to lose focus with all of the work we have to do (trust me, I. Know.) however, keep calm, because soon, it’ll be over and you can enjoy all the peppermint bark and holiday presents in the world!

As for the post-Thanksgiving yucky feeling, small steps can make you feel a ton better. Walk to class instead of take your car, enjoy the perfect fall air by taking a nice evening walk, enjoy fruits instead of cake, and take it easy. With all of the stress of finals, the last thing I want to do is trudge all the way to the gym, so instead of feeling guilty, I do things like eating healthier and exercise in my room. You don’t need to train for a marathon (especially with all of the tests and homework), but don’t become completely immobile either. See…it’s a lot easier than you think! So, if you ever feel like you’re gonna scream: take a deep breath, pick up an apple, and hunker down on that paper that’s due the last day of classes…there is a definite light at the end of the tunnel!

Until next time, folks!

*Rachel
