Here’s 10 potentially fun, funny, and interesting things you did not know about Dean and the community around us, Franklin, Massachusetts!

1. Dean College has a swimming pool. Wait, we do? Yup. And students can use it! Swimming is GREAT exercise!

boomer_ugly2. Our Bulldog mascot used to look like a rabbit.

3. Minutes up the road from Dean at the Town Common, there is an awesome farmers market when the weather gets warmer! Awesome locally grown produce, lots of desserts, etc. Students should definitely check it out.

4. This one MAY be obvious, but we’re willing to bet some people didn’t even put two and two together…Franklin, MA was named after…Benjamin Franklin! Whaaaaaat!? It is also home to America’s first public library, and Benjamin Franklin’s statue is right out front.

5. Franklin actually has a town song. And it’s actually pretty good! Listen to it.

6. Not EVERY video Dean produces has Rachel Ladd in it.

…but most of them do.

7. The “Pieri gym” on campus is named after Lou Pieri, who was the owner of the Providence Reds/Rhode Island Reds (a hockey team that played in the Canadian-American Hockey League between 1926 and 1936 and the American Hockey League from 1936 to 1977) and he was also part owner of the Boston Celtics.

Students design & actually build the amazing sets, and are an integral role in tech and the production crew. The entire production of a show consist of students in the School of The Arts, School of Dance and School of Business.

9. Dean College has a unique relationship with The Kraft Group/Patriot Place in nearby Foxboro, MA. For example, Dean welcomed Bob Kraft to campus to speak at the Executive Lecture Series as part of the Dean Leadership Institute in 2012. (Cheap plug, 2013 will be Bert Jacobs from The Life is good Company — don’t miss it, RSVP NOW, it is FREE!). Dean also has a unique Sports Management degree, which could be VERY useful if you’re looking for a job working for the Patriots of the Revolution!

10. The number 90. 90% of students live on campus. 90% of students receive some form of merit aid. 90% of students read this blog. (OK, maybe not…but how awesome was this article? Share it on Facebook!)

So…how many of those 10 things did you already know?

Sports Management: Is it About the Profits or the Fans?

Terry Francona BookIn Francona: the Red Sox YearsTerry Francona relates his experience with the Red Sox organization.  Previews of the book indicated that the Red Sox ownership view the Red Sox as a business that should be run at a profit.  While it is appropriate for the Red Sox to be thought of as a business, it is important to recognize that as a sports organization, the Red Sox should also be concerned with the competitive element of winning and the impact it has on the fan base.

Let’s compare the approach of the Red Sox organization with the New England Patriots organization.  Clearly, the Kraft organization is concerned with being profitable.  However, they have not sacrificed the competitive element.  The Patriots have been very successful competitively under the Kraft organization.  The Patriots have had one of the most winning records in NFL history.  They have achieved the goals of profitability and winning simultaneously.

The “take away” is that although sports organizations are a business, they are distinct in that their mission should include the spirit of athletic competition and winning. The fans are the sport organization’s customers and they should be viewed with a customer service mentality.

I welcome all comments.

Dean College Visits The Razor to Catch a New England Patriots Game

Dean College brought a large group of High School guidance counselors, Dean students, Alumni and college staff to Gillette Stadium a few weeks ago to witness the Pats take on the Buffalo Bills. It was a tight game, but we like to think the Dean cheering section helped the Pats to a win. If you’re interested in attending next year, email getsocial@dean.edu!

Boston Herald: Robert Kraft’s gift to Dean College student goes a long way

From the Sunday, November 11, 2012 edition of the Boston Herald:

Kraft gesture was ‘life-altering’ gift

By: Karen Guregian

Sometimes, the best stories are the ones that occur without a script. They come about naturally. And quite often, they don’t get much attention.

This one deserves it.

In March, Patriots owner Robert Kraft gave a speech at Dean College in Franklin. He lectured the students about the business side of sports, spoke about leadership, and also discussed the importance of education and getting a college degree. From there, Kraft’s visit evolved into much more.

Following the speech, Kraft was headed out of the lecture hall when he was introduced to a student, Francis Sheehan of Norwood.

Sheehan, a theater arts major, was going through a difficult time because he had just lost his mother Katherine to esophageal cancer only a few weeks before. Sheehan knew Kraft was also dealing with the loss of his beloved wife Myra, who had died eight months earlier.

After the initial greetings, the two were left alone to chat. Kraft warmly embraced the young man after hearing his story.

Sheehan felt at ease with the Patriots CEO. The 23-year-old senior wanted to know when it would get easier, dealing with the loss of a loved one.

“I wanted to tell him, ‘I’m sorry,’ and I wanted to know if it got better, and if that hurt got better, with it being so fresh,” Sheehan told the Herald last week. “(Kraft) was very compassionate. He told me some words of wisdom, to keep passing good things forward. To always work forward for the betterment of others.”

After that warm exchange, Kraft departed, but not before taking Dean College president Paula Rooney aside and expressing his desire to provide Sheehan with a graduation gift.

OK, I’m a Senior at Dean College. What’s Next?

We don’t want to come across as stuck-up, but we’re going to assume you’ve heard about the Dance and Theatre programs at Dean College. No seriously,  if you google “College Dance Programs” we are the first college dance program that shows up. Go try it. We’ll wait…

But just having a great program is the first step. We don’t stop there. We do everything we can to help our students answer the question, “what’s next?”  That’s why on November 28th, we’ll be welcoming Lucille DiCampli and Ronald Todorowski to campus. Those name’s don’t do it for you? How about the MSA Talent Agency? Still nothing? Fine…how about Dancing with the Stars? Glee? The X Factor? So You Think You Can Dance? SMASH on NBC? McDonald/Selznick Associates are placing their talent all over the place, from on-screen to on-stage to back stage, and Dean is very fortunate that Ms. DiCampli & Mr. Todorowski will be on campus on the 28th speaking with our Seniors regarding the ins and outs of agency representation and what it takes to become a working dancer. Additionally, the MSA folks will be conducting a two hour mock audition for our seniors.

Not bad, right?  But what if you’re not a dance or theatre major? How about business, right? Well, remember when Robert Kraft from the Kraft Group/New England Patriots came to campus earlier this year? Bert Jacobs from Life is Good will be here next year. And next week, we’ll welcome three young men just out of college who started their own successful business, CampusTV’s.

So don’t worry – we know why you’re here and we’re going to do everything we can to help you get to where you want to go. Questions? e-mail getsocial@dean.edu.

New England Patriots Select Two From Dean College

Brittney Lynne Stanley (middle) poses with ESPN morning show hosts Mike Greenberg & Mike Golic

…cheerleaders, that is.  Every Sunday when the New England Patriots play at home at Gillette Stadium, two of Dean College dance students gear up in the Red, White and Blue to cheer on Tom Brady & Co.  Brittney-Lynee is in her third year with the Patriots while Amanda is a rookie cheerleader this season.

Couple of fun facts:

Brittney Lynne is afraid of birds, fish, frogs, and butterflies!

Amanda once tore the ligaments in her ankle while mini-golfing!
