Not a Numbers Game at Dean College

Very often, by many different people across campus, I get asked “how many facebook fans does Dean College have?” or “how many twitter followers do we have?”  I answer, and usually that is followed up with “is that good?” People often think in numbers. It’s a fair question since I am the “facebook genius” or the “social media guy” or whatever anyone else wants to label me.  But if you asked me to name the one thing I really like about Dean College, as an employee and someone who is on campus everyday, I’d say it’s that we do not think in numbers.

Dean College Admissions

Dean College Admissions Building

I have the privilege of working in the Admissions building with our awesome admissions counselors and staff. It would be very easy for this group of people to get caught up in numbers. Yes, we strive to bring in a certain amount of students, just like McDonalds strives to sell a certain amount of burgers and Ford strives to sell a certain amount of cars. But the difference is (the “Dean Difference, if you will), we are a non-profit institution, and no one walks away profiting off of a students education. Our admissions staff genuinely care about every individual that commits to Dean. It’s not “get em in the door and never

A used car salesman...

A used car salesman…

see them again.” We are not a used car dealership, and in fact, it is likely that you will maintain a relationship with the counselor who admitted you to Dean. That is unheard of at most institutions.

Another benefit to my job is I get to connect with all different people across campus. Business school staff, dance school, student activities, athletics staff; etc. they all want to see something tweeted or facebooked about them, or “hey can we make a Youtube video for this…” The one consistency I see when  I meet with all of these people? A passion for our students. A commitment to their success. You’re not Student #12091. You’re Mark Olivio, studying criminal justice, from Meriden, CT.

You may be reading this, and you may not be buying what I’m selling – and that’s OK. It may sound very market-y and salesman-ish. I’ve been educated in social media, emerging media, communications, google, web sites, etc. etc. I’ve read the books about how to reach a mass amount of people on facebook, get massive amounts of followers on twitter, etc. But that is not who I am or what I do at Dean. It’s not about facebook, or pinterest or this very blog- those are just the Social Mediamediums I use to help connect with our students, alumni, parents of students, etc. The one thing those all have in common? They are all people. They are all individuals with different backstories, all unified by a connection somehow to Dean College. So to me, it doesn’t matter how many facebook fans or twitter followers or instagram likes Dean College has – because I don’t get caught up in numbers. I guess it’s just contagious around here.

headshotJosh Singer is the Online Marketing Coordinator at Dean College. Follow him on twitter @JoshSinger33, and don’t believe a word he says – the only reason he doesn’t get caught up in numbers is because he is REALLY bad at math.

Hello, Dean College!

Bonjour, mon amis! My name is Rachel Ladd, and I am SUPER DUPER excited to be a Dean College Blog contributor! Just a little bit about myself…I’m a senior from Rhode Island, studying Theatre. I got my AA at Dean in Musical Theatre, but I loved it so much that I decided to come back! I’m loud, my favorite color is pink (and leopard), I hate capital letters (but I guess I’ll use them for the sake of Dean), and I’m a Student Ambassador. Hmmm…what else? When prompted with what “Friends” character I’d be, I always answer with “a combo, not just one.” My favorite food is mac n’ cheese (Kraft animal shapes, preferably), and when I grow up, I want to be Minnie Mouse.

But enough about that! Let’s talk Dean! If you already go here, or are even thinking about going here, one thing must be made clear (and is very well-known): Dean is different. I chose Dean over the other two places I got into (one being a University) because of the warm, welcoming atmosphere and little details like small class sizes. These things make Dean different because Dean recognizes you’re an individual, not just someone who’s giving them money. ALSO, Dean’s mascot is a bulldog…I mean, C’MONNNN, how can you not love this face ?!

Am I right?!

But anyway, enough about adorable puppy dogs, let’s get back to the college. To wrap this up & make it short and sweet, I love it here! This post was more of an intro, BUT, I can never keep my mouth shut about how much I love Dean College. (Also, our first blog post was our students and staff doing a cover of “Call Me Maybe”…awesome). So, until next time lovely readers, have a wonderful fall day…week…or however long it takes me to write another post. See ya later, alligators !

Why Dean College?

Why Dean College?

A college campus is a very unique place.  You’ve got so many people from so many different parts of the United States and across the world all in one place.  You’ve got faculty who are some of the most educated people in their field; whether you want to learn about politics, economics, sports management, theatre, dance, communications, history, etc. There’s staff from librarians to athletic trainers to admissions counselors to career advisers to student activity coordinators to residence life coordinators to…well, you get the point.  The Dean College campus is like our own little town within a town; we’ve even got our own currency (Boomers Bucks!).  And while we have a very diverse staff, we all have one common goal, and that is to help answer the question: Why Dean College?

Our goal for the Dean College blog is not to simply advertise our College to our readers, rather, we hope to give an informal voice to everyone across campus so our readers can get a clear answer to the question, Why Dean College?  In order to achieve this, we have enlisted the help of two current Dean students, Rachel Ladd & Katie Mancini.  Both Seniors here at Dean College, Rachel is majoring in Theatre and Katie is majoring in Dance. Rachel is working very hard preparing for her role in Noises Off, a theatre production being presented by Dean College, while Katie is blogging for us from Washington D.C., where she is participating in the prestigious internship program through The Washington Center.  We’ll have blog posts putting the spotlight on our student athletes, student ambassadors, Noises Off director Matt Green (who just so happens to have spent over five years as a Blue Man in Blue Man Group!), Dean of the School of Business Robert Cuomo (a genius economist who can tell you exactly how to get gas prices down and the facebook stock price up), and so many more fascinating people across campus.  We invite you to comment, share, or suggest blog ideas to us by emailing GetSocial@Dean.Edu. Thanks for following along with us!
