Staff/Faculty Softball Team Puts Undefeated Record Up Against Students

In a tradition that has gone on since Dean opened its doors in 1865 (not really), the staff/faculty vs student softball game will be this Friday, April 22, 2013 at 4PM. Head on over to Grant Field to check out the action, or better yet, join the student team and take down the UNDEFEATED staff/faculty team. You’ll go down in the history books for doing it. If you’re interested, contact Coach Rich Fazzi (rfazzi@dean.edu) and get in the game. Still not convinced? Take a look at the confidence level of the staff/faculty team:

Now go sign up.

Dean College Releases Video Response to Khalil Edney’s Buzzer Beater Shot

Rumors are swirling…

edneytimes The New York Times is reporting Khalil Edney will be a Bulldog at Dean College next year. But we’re not here to set the record straight on that just yet. We do, however, have a Dean College employee who thinks the shot seen ’round the world isn’t all that impressive. In fact, he seems to think anyone can make that shot. In case you haven’t seen the shot, watch it here.

Then…feel free to check out our video response.

The “Dark Side” of Social Media

cassieSocial media has undoubtedly taken over much of our lives, with the invention of smartphones you’d be hard pressed to find a Dean College student that isn’t updating the world of their day to day activities through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or something. However, many avid users of these sites forget that not everything they post stays where they posted it. Here’s two ways Social Media was used in a way that was less than preferred, teaching us all that we need to keep a close eye on the way we represent and protect ourselves online.

1. Carly McKinney- 23 Year old Carly Mckinney, a middle school teacher in Aurora, CO. Was recently fired after a number of her tweets became public. Using a protected account on what she assumed would remain a private twitter page, McKinney tweeted inappropriate photos of herself. She even admitted to wrong doing while on the job in this tweet:

“Watching a drug bust go down in the parking lot. It’s funny cuz I have weed in my car in the staff parking lot.”

Needless to say, McKinney’s private account didn’t remain private for long. Those tweets, photos and other posts are now linked to hundreds of online articles retelling her unfortunate story. McKinney has her twitter to thank for her unemployment and national humiliation.

2. Humans of New York Vs. DKNY – Brandon Stanton is the man behind the increasingly popular photo blog Humans of New York (can be found on both Tumblr and Facebook.) Stanton, who spends parts of his days walking around NYC and taking artsy picture of its inhabitants then posts the photos to his blog and includes a short story about or quotation from the photos subject. Stanton’s pages are followed by well over 500,000 fans. Over this past weekend, Stanton was informed by a follower that over 300 of his pictures were on display in a DKNY store over in Bangkok. On display, without permission from Stanton at all, he explained the situation more in this Facebook post.

“I was approached by a representative of  who asked to purchase 300 of my photos to hang in their store windows “around the world.” They offered me $15,000. A friend in the industry told me that $50 per photo was not nearly enough to receive from a company with hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue. So I asked for more money. They said “no.” Today, a fan sent me a photo from a DKNY store in Bangkok. The window is full of my photos. These photos were used without my knowledge, and without compensation.”

Stanton’s  post calling out this world-famous company quickly received over 40,000 likes and shares off of his HONY Facebook alone, creating a backlash of nasty status’ and posts on DKNY’s own Facebook page slandering the company. Within 2 hours of the post going public, DKNY has received over 10,000 hateful comments on their own Facebook page shaming the company for their blatant disrespect of artists along with copyright infringement and theft. Social Media was helpful in exposing this scam, but did nothing to help DKNY protect themselves or gain any respect from the companies dwindling fans when nearly 10 hours later they had yet to respond to the accusations.

So what can we learn from these mistakes? Rule number one is try and keep your social media sites kosher. Don’t post anything you wouldn’t want your mom, grandmother or boss to see. I know this can be challenging, and it is for me as well, but it can be something we strive to improve upon over our college years. Use your sites to be informative, funny and whatever else you want to be, but think twice before you click! Also, don’t assume that because you declare ownership over creative media online that it’s safe from scammers. Be sure to protect your creations with copyrighting, etc!

On a completely unrelated note: Come see Dean’s College’s school of the Arts presentation of “Romeo and Juliet” this week and weekend! Tickets can be purchased at http://www.dean.edu/romeoandjuliet. This is a show you seriously don’t want to miss. Plus you might just happen to see some familiar bloggers faces ;)

See you next time!

Mr. Taylor is a competing athlete and Division 1 college wrestling coach at Columbia University. He graduated from the University of Maryland as a Division 1 three-time All-American wrestler in 2010 and currently ranks among the top-five pinners in NCAA history.

Committed to civil rights and social justice, Hudson wore a Human Rights campaign sticker on his wrestling headgear in college to show solidarity—as a heterosexual athlete ally—with the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community. This single act drew media attention around the country and prompted thousands of inspiring, personal messages.
With this encouragement, Hudson became committed to speaking louder as an advocate. He founded the non-profit organization Athlete Ally as a resource to encourage athletes, coaches, parents, fans and other members of the community to respect all individuals involved in sports, regardless of their perceived or actual sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
Hudson was recently honored for his work with PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) with the 2011 “Straight for Equality in Sports” award. He is a frequent blogger for The Huffington Post and currently resides in New York City.

We’re Off to the Festival!

RachelHello everyone! For the next week I will be out of commission (in a good way!) because we are off to festival! The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, that is!

Every year, arts management students, stage managers, tech theatre students, and of course, us actors from Dean (and other colleges from around the country) attend the KCACTF, based on where they live (New England is Region 1). There, we compete for the Irene Ryan acting scholarship award, the Musical Theatre Initiative, among other competitions. We also get to take a TON of workshops and classes (I, for one, am excited to take the Bob Fosse jazz class!) And the coolest part about this is that Dean College participates every year, so every theatre major gets a chance to experience it!

Until I return, y’all!

Welcome Back Bulldogs!

Hi Guys! Cassie Balzarini here, one of several new bloggers writing our little hearts out this spring semester. On behalf of not only myself and the other bloggers, but the entire social media team – I’m excited to welcome you back to Bulldog Nation!

The beginning of a new semester brings many exciting opportunities for college students across the world and things here in Franklin are no different! I’m just here today to take a few minutes out of your day to highlight some of the multiple chances you all have as students to get involved, make a difference, help yourself and have some serious fun.

It can all be broken down into 4 basic choices:

  1. Join A Club
  2. Apply for a Leadership Position
  3. Attend an on campus event
  4. Talk to an Adult

Now let’s get a little more specific.

Join a Club
Did you know that Dean College has over 20 clubs and associations on this very campus? Even more so did you know that ALL of these clubs are open to anyone with an interest? With meetings taking place at night after classes have finished there’s really no reason not to try out a club that piques your interest. The Student Activities Committee has meetings once a week on Monday’s at 7:30pm in the Campus Center Golder Room ( that’s the big one on the top floor!) The Residence Hall Association (of which I’m an Eboard member!) also meets once a week on Monday’s at 8pm in Chapman House. All clubs and their meeting times can be found on today@dean!

Apply for a Leadership Position
You probably know someone on campus who is currently holding a leadership position here. From Orientation Leaders and Community Advisors to SGA Senators and Club Eboard members the opportunities to be looked up to and make a difference on campus are plentiful. Residence Life  and Student Activities are accepting applications for these positions in the ’13- ’14 school year now!

Attend an on Campus Event
Now, I’m going to be blunt for a moment here but anyone claiming that there is nothing to do around here either needs to stop looking at the ground 24/7 or needs to get their eyes checked because the SAC alone have provided students with more than enough nighttime and weekend activities. Last week alone we had Wing Night, Make your Own Dog Tag and a Dance! All  SAC sponsored events and details about them can be found in the “Campus Events” section of today@dean. Now, if walking across campus to the CC is too far a journey for you (Yes JOHA residents I’m talking about you) then talk to your RD or CAs! Residence life hosts dozens of events a semester in both the residence halls and other locations on campus! A bunch of other clubs are hosting events too, so read the plasma’s and check today@dean so you can get off your butts and have some fun!

Talk to an adult
I know, I know! We’re all in college now we feel like adults and in many ways we are! But, there’s always something to be learned from those who have a bit more life experience than us. Dean College’s campus is swarming with a professional staff both fresh out of college and otherwise who would love to get a chance to know some of the students better! Plus, it’s never to early to begin building a professional network! Admissions counselors and professors, residence directors and academic advisors and even the lovely lunch ladies greeting us all day long at the caf - Everyone here has a story and everyone here has some knowledge and wisdom to give. So step in and say hello when your RDs/Advisors/Professor’s office door is open, take the time to ask Tina in the caf how her day was and NEVER be afraid to reach out to anyone when you find yourself in over your head and/or needing some help.  They may not be college students now but they sure were at some point!

So good luck this semester bulldogs! I hope you’re all able to get the most out of this 2-4 year experience!

Oh, and don’t forget to do your homework ;)

headshot Hi, all – I’m getting a little bit tired of the notion that “social media” is somehow different from “real life.” Newsflash: they are one in the same. To get this point across, myself and Tom Carroll in Admissions made a little video we like to call, Social Media In Real Life. Enjoy!  - Josh

Sports Management: Is it About the Profits or the Fans?

Terry Francona BookIn Francona: the Red Sox YearsTerry Francona relates his experience with the Red Sox organization.  Previews of the book indicated that the Red Sox ownership view the Red Sox as a business that should be run at a profit.  While it is appropriate for the Red Sox to be thought of as a business, it is important to recognize that as a sports organization, the Red Sox should also be concerned with the competitive element of winning and the impact it has on the fan base.

Let’s compare the approach of the Red Sox organization with the New England Patriots organization.  Clearly, the Kraft organization is concerned with being profitable.  However, they have not sacrificed the competitive element.  The Patriots have been very successful competitively under the Kraft organization.  The Patriots have had one of the most winning records in NFL history.  They have achieved the goals of profitability and winning simultaneously.

The “take away” is that although sports organizations are a business, they are distinct in that their mission should include the spirit of athletic competition and winning. The fans are the sport organization’s customers and they should be viewed with a customer service mentality.

I welcome all comments.
