Not a Numbers Game at Dean College

Very often, by many different people across campus, I get asked “how many facebook fans does Dean College have?” or “how many twitter followers do we have?”  I answer, and usually that is followed up with “is that good?” People often think in numbers. It’s a fair question since I am the “facebook genius” or the “social media guy” or whatever anyone else wants to label me.  But if you asked me to name the one thing I really like about Dean College, as an employee and someone who is on campus everyday, I’d say it’s that we do not think in numbers.

Dean College Admissions

Dean College Admissions Building

I have the privilege of working in the Admissions building with our awesome admissions counselors and staff. It would be very easy for this group of people to get caught up in numbers. Yes, we strive to bring in a certain amount of students, just like McDonalds strives to sell a certain amount of burgers and Ford strives to sell a certain amount of cars. But the difference is (the “Dean Difference, if you will), we are a non-profit institution, and no one walks away profiting off of a students education. Our admissions staff genuinely care about every individual that commits to Dean. It’s not “get em in the door and never

A used car salesman...

A used car salesman…

see them again.” We are not a used car dealership, and in fact, it is likely that you will maintain a relationship with the counselor who admitted you to Dean. That is unheard of at most institutions.

Another benefit to my job is I get to connect with all different people across campus. Business school staff, dance school, student activities, athletics staff; etc. they all want to see something tweeted or facebooked about them, or “hey can we make a Youtube video for this…” The one consistency I see when  I meet with all of these people? A passion for our students. A commitment to their success. You’re not Student #12091. You’re Mark Olivio, studying criminal justice, from Meriden, CT.

You may be reading this, and you may not be buying what I’m selling – and that’s OK. It may sound very market-y and salesman-ish. I’ve been educated in social media, emerging media, communications, google, web sites, etc. etc. I’ve read the books about how to reach a mass amount of people on facebook, get massive amounts of followers on twitter, etc. But that is not who I am or what I do at Dean. It’s not about facebook, or pinterest or this very blog- those are just the Social Mediamediums I use to help connect with our students, alumni, parents of students, etc. The one thing those all have in common? They are all people. They are all individuals with different backstories, all unified by a connection somehow to Dean College. So to me, it doesn’t matter how many facebook fans or twitter followers or instagram likes Dean College has – because I don’t get caught up in numbers. I guess it’s just contagious around here.

headshotJosh Singer is the Online Marketing Coordinator at Dean College. Follow him on twitter @JoshSinger33, and don’t believe a word he says – the only reason he doesn’t get caught up in numbers is because he is REALLY bad at math.

Dean College Visits The Razor to Catch a New England Patriots Game

Dean College brought a large group of High School guidance counselors, Dean students, Alumni and college staff to Gillette Stadium a few weeks ago to witness the Pats take on the Buffalo Bills. It was a tight game, but we like to think the Dean cheering section helped the Pats to a win. If you’re interested in attending next year, email getsocial@dean.edu!

Post-Thanksgiving “Wisdom”

Happy post-Thanksgiving, everyone! How did everyone’s Black Friday go? Score any good details? Now that Thanksgiving and Black Friday are over, and our mini-break is almost over, it’s time to focus on those last few weeks until Winter Break. And though many of us can’t even BELIEVE that the semester is almost over, we still have a TON of stuff to do! So, to help everyone with that post-Thanksgiving “Blah” feeling, and all of the work we have to complete, I have written this very blog post!

First and foremost, everyone has to remember that grades are super important – it’s really easy to think “It’s the end of the semester…I’m too tired and stressed, so I just don’t feel like doing it anymore.” No no no NO, my friends! Not the way to go! Final projects, tests, speeches, etc. are usually worth 20% or more of your overall grade for the semester, so if you bomb that, you can kiss your B+ goodbye! So, enjoy a good cup of coffee, get a study group together, get enough sleep, and FOCUS. It’s so easy to lose focus with all of the work we have to do (trust me, I. Know.) however, keep calm, because soon, it’ll be over and you can enjoy all the peppermint bark and holiday presents in the world!

As for the post-Thanksgiving yucky feeling, small steps can make you feel a ton better. Walk to class instead of take your car, enjoy the perfect fall air by taking a nice evening walk, enjoy fruits instead of cake, and take it easy. With all of the stress of finals, the last thing I want to do is trudge all the way to the gym, so instead of feeling guilty, I do things like eating healthier and exercise in my room. You don’t need to train for a marathon (especially with all of the tests and homework), but don’t become completely immobile either. See…it’s a lot easier than you think! So, if you ever feel like you’re gonna scream: take a deep breath, pick up an apple, and hunker down on that paper that’s due the last day of classes…there is a definite light at the end of the tunnel!

Until next time, folks!

Dean Launches Social Media Contest for Students

The grind of being a College student can be tough sometimes. Good grades are never gifted, and we understand that – our social media team launched a contest to send a couple of our students in to Boston with tickets to either a Boston Celtics game or the So You Think You Can Dance Live Tour.  Why those? Because today (Nov 6) is the home opener for Dean men and women’s basketball teams, and later this week we’ll have MSA Talent Agency on campus scouting and working with the dancers from our renowned dance program.

Only Dean students can win the tickets, BUT if you are a parent of a student, friend of a student, connected somehow to a Dean student, you can enter the contest and win for them! However, a Dean student MUST pick up the tickets.

To enter the contest, follow this link: http://bit.ly/PUrZ2o

OK, I’m a Senior at Dean College. What’s Next?

We don’t want to come across as stuck-up, but we’re going to assume you’ve heard about the Dance and Theatre programs at Dean College. No seriously,  if you google “College Dance Programs” we are the first college dance program that shows up. Go try it. We’ll wait…

But just having a great program is the first step. We don’t stop there. We do everything we can to help our students answer the question, “what’s next?”  That’s why on November 28th, we’ll be welcoming Lucille DiCampli and Ronald Todorowski to campus. Those name’s don’t do it for you? How about the MSA Talent Agency? Still nothing? Fine…how about Dancing with the Stars? Glee? The X Factor? So You Think You Can Dance? SMASH on NBC? McDonald/Selznick Associates are placing their talent all over the place, from on-screen to on-stage to back stage, and Dean is very fortunate that Ms. DiCampli & Mr. Todorowski will be on campus on the 28th speaking with our Seniors regarding the ins and outs of agency representation and what it takes to become a working dancer. Additionally, the MSA folks will be conducting a two hour mock audition for our seniors.

Not bad, right?  But what if you’re not a dance or theatre major? How about business, right? Well, remember when Robert Kraft from the Kraft Group/New England Patriots came to campus earlier this year? Bert Jacobs from Life is Good will be here next year. And next week, we’ll welcome three young men just out of college who started their own successful business, CampusTV’s.

So don’t worry – we know why you’re here and we’re going to do everything we can to help you get to where you want to go. Questions? e-mail getsocial@dean.edu.

Dean College continues their spotlight series, where students, faculty & alumni are introduced to the Dean community.  This spotlight is on David Quinn, Linebacker for the Dean Bulldogs football team.  David, spotlight’s on you!

Name: David Quinn   Age: 20   Hometown: Sudbury, MA Major: BS of Business with a Concentration in Sport Management

What are your professional goals when it comes to sports and academics?

“Academically, my goals are to graduate my Bachelors Degree with at least a 3.9 GPA and to receive a Masters Degree shortly after.  Once I have completed my Masters, I hope to work for a professional football organization.  After gaining some valuable experience, I want to open up my own athletic performance facility.”

If you could meet one famous athlete, who would it be, And why?

“I would want to meet Michael Jordan because of how he played the game.  He’s a man who showed up and gave it all he had every single day.  In doing so, he became the greatest basketball player the world has ever seen.  His will to win was unbelievable to watch, which in turn became something that I have embodied in my life.  By witnessing his success, I learned to live my life to the fullest, strive for perfection and be the best me that I can be without allowing anyone to break my spirit.”

Three Interesting Things About David:

“I have achieved a 3.975 GPA while balancing Football, Community Adviser, Peer Tutor, RHA Program Coordinator, Business Club and Student-Athlete Leadership Team responsibilities.”

“In my spare time I like to examine philosophical questions about life and my environment.”
