2012 Football Accolades Include 4 Signed to Division-1 Teams

The Dean College Football team ended their 2012 season with an impressive 7-3 record. Even more impressive are the accolades and achievements in the month following the season. As we reported earlier,  two players were named National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Dean College FootballAmericans, and four have signed with impressive Division 1 programs in the National College Athletic Association.

Six-foot-two-inch receiver Shavarez Smith, who caught 43 balls for 685 yards and 6 touchdowns, was recruited to and signed by South Alabama (read about it on ESPN).

Lance BurlingameDean College FootballFlorida Atlantic University (FAU) was very interested in the talents of two Dean players, one on each side of the ball.  The aforementioned Rodney “Lucky” Whitehead was recruited and signed, and shortly after, defensive lineman Lance Burlingame signed with FAU (read about it in the Sun Sentinel).

Finally, the impressive play of four Dean players was recognized by well respected NCAA Division 1 football programs around the country. Starting Quarterback Trevor Vasey was heavily recruited by Elon University in North Carolina, ultimately where Vasey signed (read about it in the Providence Journal). Vasey expects to compete for the starting quarterback job immediately.

Rodney “Lucky” Whitehead and Byron Pinkston Named NJCAA Football All Americans

The National Junior College Athletic Association announced that two Dean College football players were named to the All America football teams for 2012.

Rodney “Lucky” Whitehead was named All American first-team in the TE position. In 2012, Whitehead rushed for a total of 294 yards on 46 attempts (6.4 yards per carry) and scored 3 touchdowns on the ground. Whitehead also caught 30 balls through the air gaining a total of 602 yards (average of 20.1 yards per catch) and scored 3 touchdowns. He also scored 2 touchdowns on punt returns.

Byron Pinkston was a force as an Offensive Lineman, gaining recognition as an Honorable Mention All American.

Former Linebacker for Dean Bulldogs Named an All American at Division 1 Towson University

GaddisNews came out this past week that Monte Gaddis (Junior, Towson University) was named an All-American for the NCAA Division I Towson Tigers of the Colonial Athletic Association. Prior to being recruited to play Division I football for the Tigers, Gaddis was a standout performer at Linebacker for the Dean College Bulldogs, helping the team win the 2011 Valley of the Sun Bowl in Glendale, Arizona.

Dean College Fall Sports Teams All Post Winning Record in 2012

Dean College Fall Sports Recap

The first snowfall in Franklin, Massachusetts this week signaled the official end to fall sports on the Dean College campus. Both men’s and women’s soccer, along with the football team ended their seasons with winning records.

Football

Head Coach Todd Vasey and his staff followed up leading the Bulldogs to the Valley of the Sun Bowl win in 2011 with another strong campaign, as the Dean College football team officially ended their season with 7 wins and 3 losses. The 7-3 record was good for third place in the Northeast Football Conference.

There were too many individual standout performances to list here, though it is worth noting that the Dean College passing attack easilyled the conference in total passing yards with 2,404 and passing touchdowns with 21….

Women’s Soccer

Dean College women’s soccer team made an incredible leap in 2012, as the team officially ended their season with 9 wins, 5 losses, and 1 tie, posting the first winning record for the program since 1998.

Many stellar individual performances contributed to the successful season, and four players were ranked within the top 50 in the country in NJCAA Division I.  Sophomore Jessica Gelbman was ranked  6th in saves (147 saves) and 40th in save percentage (.821 percent). Freshman Morgan Mencio led the team in points with 42 (13 goals and 16 assists). She was ranked 9th with assists and…

Men’s Soccer

Dean College men’s soccer team enjoyed quite a ride this season which included being ranked 17th in the nation, a Regional Championship win, and Divisional Championship game participation. Coach Jim Hopkins and his staff led the team to a 12 win, five loss and 2 ties season.

Name: David Quinn   Age: 20   Hometown: Sudbury, MA Major: BS of Business with a Concentration in Sport Management

What are your professional goals when it comes to sports and academics?

“Academically, my goals are to graduate my Bachelors Degree with at least a 3.9 GPA and to receive a Masters Degree shortly after.  Once I have completed my Masters, I hope to work for a professional football organization.  After gaining some valuable experience, I want to open up my own athletic performance facility.”

If you could meet one famous athlete, who would it be, And why?

“I would want to meet Michael Jordan because of how he played the game.  He’s a man who showed up and gave it all he had every single day.  In doing so, he became the greatest basketball player the world has ever seen.  His will to win was unbelievable to watch, which in turn became something that I have embodied in my life.  By witnessing his success, I learned to live my life to the fullest, strive for perfection and be the best me that I can be without allowing anyone to break my spirit.”

Three Interesting Things About David:

“I am one of the first people in history to receive third degree burns from an MRI without having any metal in my body.”

“I have achieved a 3.975 GPA while balancing Football, Community Adviser, Peer Tutor, RHA Program Coordinator, Business Club and Student-Athlete Leadership Team responsibilities.”

“In my spare time I like to examine philosophical questions about life and my environment.”

For Dean College Football Stars, the National Football League is Simply a Phone Call Away

Many children grow up with dreams of playing in the National Football League (NFL).  Working tirelessly through pee-wee’s and high school football, before being recruited to play college football, the majority of college football players will never even get close to achieving their dreams.  While Dean College football stars Durell Rice & Desmond Kearse have not made it just yet, they have the motivation and drive to follow in the footsteps of their relatives.

“Back when I was in High School, he knew I had this fire in me, so he pushed me and pushed me to be the person he knows I can be,” said starting Offensive Lineman Durell Rice.  Rice is referencing his brother Ray Rice, who is widely considered one of the best running backs in the league for the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League.
