2012 Football Accolades Include 4 Signed to Division-1 Teams

The Dean College Football team ended their 2012 season with an impressive 7-3 record. Even more impressive are the accolades and achievements in the month following the season. As we reported earlier,  two players were named National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Dean College FootballAmericans, and four have signed with impressive Division 1 programs in the National College Athletic Association.

Six-foot-two-inch receiver Shavarez Smith, who caught 43 balls for 685 yards and 6 touchdowns, was recruited to and signed by South Alabama (read about it on ESPN).

Lance BurlingameDean College FootballFlorida Atlantic University (FAU) was very interested in the talents of two Dean players, one on each side of the ball.  The aforementioned Rodney “Lucky” Whitehead was recruited and signed, and shortly after, defensive lineman Lance Burlingame signed with FAU (read about it in the Sun Sentinel).

Finally, the impressive play of four Dean players was recognized by well respected NCAA Division 1 football programs around the country. Starting Quarterback Trevor Vasey was heavily recruited by Elon University in North Carolina, ultimately where Vasey signed (read about it in the Providence Journal). Vasey expects to compete for the starting quarterback job immediately.

Congratulations to all on their achievements.

Men’s Basketball Team at Dean College Gearing up for 2012-2013 Season

Dean College is proud to introduce first year Head Coach Rich Fazzi.  Mr. Fazzi takes over coaching duties of the Men’s Basketball team at Dean College after spending time coaching with three local basketball programs, most recently as top assistant coach for Endictott College’s championship team.  Mr. Fazzi has provided the Dean College Blog a season preview for the 2012-2013 season.

The Men’s Basketball program opens up the winter campaign under the guidance of 1st year Head Coach Rich Fazzi.  Fazzi comes to Dean after two years as an assistant coach at Endicott College.  Fazzi was a part of a staff that led the Gulls to the 2011-2012 Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship.  Prior to Endicott, Fazzi was the top assistant at Suffolk University.  He started his coaching career as an assistant at Newbury College.

The Bulldogs will return four letterman from last year’s squad that went 14-11. After last season’s loss in the first round, the Bulldogs have spent the preseason preparing for a conference championship.  The task will not be an easy one with perennial conference power CCRI returning the majority of a team that lost in the National Championship this past year.  The Bulldogs will have four captains this season that will provide leadership for this upcoming campaign.

Hello, Dean College!

Bonjour, mon amis! My name is Rachel Ladd, and I am SUPER DUPER excited to be a Dean College Blog contributor! Just a little bit about myself…I’m a senior from Rhode Island, studying Theatre. I got my AA at Dean in Musical Theatre, but I loved it so much that I decided to come back! I’m loud, my favorite color is pink (and leopard), I hate capital letters (but I guess I’ll use them for the sake of Dean), and I’m a Student Ambassador. Hmmm…what else? When prompted with what “Friends” character I’d be, I always answer with “a combo, not just one.” My favorite food is mac n’ cheese (Kraft animal shapes, preferably), and when I grow up, I want to be Minnie Mouse.

But enough about that! Let’s talk Dean! If you already go here, or are even thinking about going here, one thing must be made clear (and is very well-known): Dean is different. I chose Dean over the other two places I got into (one being a University) because of the warm, welcoming atmosphere and little details like small class sizes. These things make Dean different because Dean recognizes you’re an individual, not just someone who’s giving them money. ALSO, Dean’s mascot is a bulldog…I mean, C’MONNNN, how can you not love this face ?!

Am I right?!

But anyway, enough about adorable puppy dogs, let’s get back to the college. To wrap this up & make it short and sweet, I love it here! This post was more of an intro, BUT, I can never keep my mouth shut about how much I love Dean College. (Also, our first blog post was our students and staff doing a cover of “Call Me Maybe”…awesome). So, until next time lovely readers, have a wonderful fall day…week…or however long it takes me to write another post. See ya later, alligators !

*Rachel
