Dean College Blog

Hi Everyone!

My name is Katie Mancini and I am a senior dance major here at Dean.  When choosing a title for my first blog I decided to embrace my Italian roots once I remembered “Ciao”, meaning both hello and goodbye, is fitting as I bid the District of Columbia (DC) farewell after fall semester and return to Dean College (DC) for spring semester!

If you followed my blog, ”Warrior in Washington”, then you know all about how I was in DC last semester for an internship at The Washington Center.  For those of you who may have missed that chapter, let me provide you with a quick recap:

The Washington Center is an internship and academic seminar program that provides juniors and seniors in college the opportunity to gain real world experience by working full time at an internship of your choice, taking an academic course, as well as preparing you for future employment opportunities with resume workshops, networking advice and much more.  This is an incredible, life changing opportunity that you all should at least consider taking advantage of.  DC is an exciting place with many more opportunities than I expected; many of which are outside of the political and historical worlds.

In addition to the amazing enhancements made to the academic and professional portions of your lives, it is an amazing growth opportunity for yourselves personally.  I learned MANY things including not to stand on the left side of the escalator during rush hour unless you want an angry commuter to run you over, as well as the best restaurants for happy hour according to the nonprofit professionals network.  I also ate a countless amount of waffles throughout the semester (including some with the actor who plays Manny in Modern Family), wore a suit and lobbied on Capitol Hill for the Violence Against Women Act, attended multiple dance shows in the area, and participated in a Tap Jam Improvisation Session at my favorite restaurant, Busboys and Poets.

As I transition back to Dean for my final semester, I am excited to share what I have learned by applying it here on campus.  I am also eager to learn as much as I can throughout the semester, participate in campus activities and create long lasting memories with all the people I have missed over the past 6 months.  I will keep you posted throughout the semester about my journey.
